I was born Nde Ndifonka in Bamenda, Cameroon. I grew up in a family of seven – 2 brothers, 2 sisters. Both my parents are teachers, so education for us was important. I now live in South Africa.
I view life as an adventure and I have been involved in many different ventures. I have worked as a communications expert, a writer, legal adviser amongst others. However, more recently I have become more focused on achieving specific goals. Over the years, music is something I did for leisure, but I’ve slowly grown into thinking of it as a profession, letting it take precedence over the other things I engage in.
My music is not commercial music – it’s what has been referred to as ‘message music’, so generally, people are slower to respond to it than your club music. I recently got into TV presenting as well, which I think is a great platform, not just to extend my brand, but to fulfill my passion for communicating to people about social issues affecting our communities. I also spend a lot of time in the boardroom negotiating deals.
Although I’ve always had a thing for music, I don’t think I have focused on it enough and in 2012, it’s one of my objectives to show people more of who I am as a musician. It is not socially acceptable for people where I come from to pursue a career in music – in my case, I quit from the UN to manage my music company full-time. So it is very challenging, as no one would really support such a dream. I can’t say I’ve overcome all the challenges – but I take one thing at a time, and I relish each little accomplishment, and recognise they’re all building up to where I want to be in future.
Lolhiphop Records is a music production, management and publishing company I established in 2008. We publish composers from across the continent – some notable ones being composers like Zangalewa (Waka Waka) and Flavour (Nigeria). We also record and distribute artists from different parts of the continent, and our projects are released and distributed throughout Southern Africa.
Lolhiphop media is a division of the company that specialises in social awareness campaigns. We do a lot of work with United Nations agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations e.g. as brand ambassador for the ONE Movement (an international anti-racism/xenophobia initiative championed by the United Nations), Brand Ambassador for the City of Joburg, and Brand Ambassador for South Africa’s Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Week.
