Diva’s top 10 Relaxation Methods (Part 1)

Diva’s top 10 Relaxation Methods (Part 1)

By Destini Whitis

As Women, we all need “our” time away from Life’s daily Stresses whether it’s work, home, or both. When you think of the word Woman you think of the Divas of the world and because we all have some spiciness inside of us, ladies we need all of our “Me Time”. So to all my Divas try these top ten methods of Relaxation:

Shopping- Most Divas shop because it’s an antidepressant for us, while others just can’t help themselves … before I continue let me say that I was surfing around on the internet just browsing and I saw this one guy say and I quote “that women go shopping so they can spend their husbands’ hard earned money” and I thought that was so funny because that’s what most Diva enjoy doing anyway. Not saying we are “gold diggers” but all the extra things we have to put up with or even do that’s just apart of our payment. LOL. Truth be told Divas I believe it’s just apart of our nature to catch sales and spend money on clothes, shoes, purses, and accessories because they are the necessities for the whole shopping experience. So Divas remember there is nothing wrong with relieving yourself on the Macy’s half-off day sale, it’s a wonderful thing.

Soaking bath w/candle light- Now this is a must for all Divas regardless of your circumstances and when I speak on this matter it based on my own personal experiences I deal with daily. Ladies you come home from a very long day at work, and still it seems like your day is just beginning because you still have another full-time job of taking care of your family. You have to cook, then get the little ones ready for a bath so they can go to bed, on top of having to clean up the house, you must iron everyone’s clothes for the next day because who else but you is going to do it right ladies? Now that all of your ‘chores’ are done (deep breath) it’s your time to unwind. You go and run you a nice hot bath, put a little lavender in your water because it relaxes and calms the body, then you light your candles, pop in Sade and let her take you away Divas. There is nothing more relaxing after the day you’ve had, I know.

Beauty Shops- I know why my experiences of going to the beauty shop is relaxing for me, so I decided to ask some of my Facebook Divas “why going to the beauty shop is relaxing for them and a good friend of mine, Ms. Leashia said and I quote ”because it’s the time for us to get pampered, clear our heads, vent about a lot of topics that only us as women can relate to.” Once I read this from her I found it to be so true, I asked her to continue and she said basically it’s time to feel good about ourselves. She hit the nail right on the head with that one, because at some point we know we look good because that’s what we tell ourselves. Knowing we look good and showing ourselves that we look good are two different things. All Diva’s know they look good, so every once in a while we have to make that knowledge we have about ourselves come true and what better way to make it than by relaxing, Thank you Ms. Leashia for your enlighten thoughts.

Taking Long Walks- These little trips down the street or around the corner can be very relaxing for the ones who enjoy just stepping out of the house for a while, not even to go anywhere special, but to just get some peace of mind. Taking long walks can be relaxing for so many reasons especially if you have a lot going on in your mind and when it seems everywhere you go you’re just closed inside with no extra air to breathe. This may be a time where you want to go walk your dogs, pick some wild flowers, meet any new neighbors or even just have a conversation with the old one. Walking is also good for your health because you may just have eaten a little too much and you want to burn off some of those calories to stay fit. Divas now you know loosing a little is better then gaining a lot, am I right? Enjoy this time get away you’ll be happy you did.

Out To Eat By Yourself- Eating out is an enjoyable and relaxing experience when there is no one but yourself, no one talking to you about anything just calm restaurant music and the nice waitress working hard for her tip. All Divas should enjoy this when you don’t have to cook, but to have someone to make exactly what it is you want. Just to be sitting down knowing you’re free to indulge on goodness you see with no worries. Take advantage ladies, I insist that you do.

Reading a Book- I truly believe that reading a book is an escape from your problems or stresses that you deal with daily. Sometimes all it takes is a good book and a hot cup of tea to unwind, relax, and calm every pressure point in your body so that you will be able to enter a special place in you mind. Reading requires you to think and construct meaning as you turn the pages of a book so that your mind will focus on what you’re reading and not what’s bothering you. From so much experience with book it is the best relaxation you can buy.

Meditating- Dr. Frederick Lenz once said that the practice of meditation is emptying the mind. When the mid is empty, completely empty it’s perfect meditation. Having some experience on meditating, I found that to be so true. Too much stress will have your mind all cluttered up to the point it will try constantly to invade you body and eliminate your feeling towards certain things and people. So Divas try to work on the meditating (Woo Saaaa) I guarantee you nothing but peace, serenity, and calmness.

Manicure & Pedicure- Oh yes Divas there is nothing like having yourself all pampered up, and then relaxing with some warm tea. This is one of my favorite relaxation methods and no matter how I’m feeling it always cheers me up. I believe Divas it’s the way they rub your hands and feet, then massage them with the warm lotion that just drives us crazy. Most of the women I asked about how they feel getting a Mani & pedi? agreed. One lady said it’s better than sex, and I don’t want to speak on that but I thought she was really funny; another lady said “It’s the feeling you have when you can just run away from your house and don’t tell anyone where you’re going”. You know what? She was right. So I asked one last Diva you guys and she flat out said “I don’t do it often I just received my tax money, Ladies!” I turned my head and starting praying to God that I didn’t laugh out loud, so there you have it Divas.

Listening to Music/Dancing- There’s nothing like some good soulful music to get you going with your day and keep you on your toes, while trying to relax. Music and dancing are another gateway to relief and are become very popular in many countries today. Depending on what you like to hear or what keeps your rhythm together, music and dancing are good for the soul honey. Most people think that you can not relieve stress by listening to music or by dancing your heart out, but you I’m here to tell you that it works. I don’t know if any of you guys do it, but the CD I usually pick is the one matching my mood and dance to it, yes Divas it follows right behind. So go ahead and pop in that Chris Brown CD, put on your shoes and shake your groove thang.

Hanging with the Girls- This is the time that Divas get together and talk about everything, no matter who and what it’s about. We do this twice a month to make sure we catch up on who’s dating, who’s getting married, who’s having a baby, so on. This is a time where there are absolutely NO MEN & CHILDREN, AND BECAUSE OF THAT REASON WE GO SHOPPING – which is when us, Divas plan our night- out and what we are going to wear or better yet buy to wear out. We use this time to get out all of our tears, fears, and stresses with each other. Who better else to spend this time with except with your Divas, If you see Waiting to Exhale then ladies you know what I’m talking about.

Once again I would like to thank the readers of Dunia Magazine for reading another one of my articles and to Mrs. Lema our Ed-in-Chief, thank you very much that Chris Brown statement was for you :-)

How To Ice An Injury

How To Ice An Injury

Icing an injured body part is an important part of treatment, it helps reduce inflammation and causes relief. Icing injuries can be effective for sprains, strains, overuse injuries and bruises. The following information is important for individuals, parents, athletes, instructors, teachers and anyone who might find themselves needing to help an injured person. Learn how to properly ice an injury.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: 15 minutes

Here’s How:

1. Get the ice on quickly.
Icing is most effective in the immediate period following an injury. The effect of icing diminishes significantly after about 48 hours.

2. Perform an “ice massage.”
Apply ice directly to the injury. Move the ice frequently, not allowing it to sit in one spot.

3. Don’t forget to elevate.
Keep the injured body part elevated above the heart while icing — this will further help reduce swelling.

4. Watch the clock.
Ice for 15-20 minutes, but never longer. You can cause further damage to the tissues, including frostbite, by icing for too long.

5. Allow time between treatments.
Allow area to warm for at least 45 minutes or an hour before beginning the icing routine again.

6. Repeat as desired.
Ice as frequently as you wish, so long as the area is warm to the touch and has normal sensation before repeating.

Tips:

Ice Option 1 — Traditional:
Use a Ziploc bag with ice cubes or crushed ice. Add a little water to the ice bag so it will conform to your body.

Ice Option 2 — Best:
Keep paper cups filled with water in your freezer. Peel the top of the cup away and massage the ice-cup over the injury in a circular pattern allowing the ice to melt away.

Ice Option 3 – Creative:
Use a bag of frozen peas or corn from the frozen goods section. This option provides a reusable treatment method that is also edible.

4– Prevent Frostbite:
Do not allow ice to sit against the skin without a layer of protection. Either continually move the ice (see “ice massage”) or use a thin towel between the ice and skin.

Everyday activities that help burn calories

Everyday activities that help burn calories

Calories are vital in providing the body with energy it needs to perform it’s daily duties, and paying attention to how much we consume or don’t consume is important in living healthily. The equation is quite simple: by taking in fewer calories than we burn in a day, we lose weight; and when we consume more calories than we burn, we tend to put on weight.

Burning enough calories is hence important in avoiding weight gain. Physical activity is how to easily burn calories. By simply trading in a sedentary lifestyle for an active one we help our bodies burn fat. During this festive season, you can reap lots of rewards by minimizing time spent watching TV, sitting on the computer and maximizing on calorie-burning activities that fire up metabolism.

Different foods contain different amounts of calories. Low calorie foods generally fall in the vegetable category, e.g 1 serving of spinach, 8 calories.

The following activities are sure to help.

  • Do the dishes, 15 minutes; burn 54 calories.
  • Iron your clothes 20 minutes; 57 calories.
