10 Tips on how to Get Along with People

  • 1. Be polite. Like butterflies drawn to nectar, people are drawn to good mannered and well behaved individuals. Humility is also quite irresistible. These cost nothing.
  • 2. Remember names. Everyone likes the sound of their name, this is a sure way to win points.
  • 3. Listen. People like to know that their opinion matters. Shut up sometimes. Carefully craft the art of ‘being a person of few words’ by learning to listen … hard I know, but try. Remember the saying, “empty vessels make the loudest noise”?
  • 4. Appreciate. Acknowledge the work, contributions and gifts of others. Be sure to let them know that you do. ‘Congratulations‘ and ‘job well done‘ work magic at work and even in our personal lives. Hand written ‘thank you’ notes make an unforgettable impression.
  • 5. Be yourself. Just like fake designer handbags, people smell ‘fakeness’ from a distance. Don’t be one. Keep things real always. Remember that not everyone is going to like the real or the fake you anyway, why hide? We all need polishing up, why not try personal development by reading and attending seminars.
  • 6. Engage others. Make people feel important by acknowledging them, being curious about their lives and above all, being genuinely concerned about their well being.
  • 7. Give. Approach relationships from the ‘giving’ angle, not from what you stand to gain. Folks are unconsciously drawn to those who provide value.
  • 8. Stand for something concrete. Let those around you recognize your values and the things that are important to you. Say what you mean and mean what you say. It’s hard to respect folks who flip and then flop.
  • 9. Don’t be a know-it-all. Achievements are great and should be applauded, but sometimes, forget those degrees, and shelves full of accolades for a minute and allow yourself a chance to grow. Life itself is ‘continuing education’. By seeking to learn, and to understand where others are coming from, building rapport becomes a wrap.
  • 10. Last but not least, have a positive attitude. Everyone who meets you should be glad they did. Remember that a positive attitude attracts positive things.
